If you’re not sure why you should learn German, let these 5 reasons speak for themselves…
1. German is the most spoken language in Europe!
According to the European Union, German is the language with most native speakers in Europe being (co-)official in 7 countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Belgium, Italy (South Tyrol/Bolzano) and also in Poland and Denmark it is a recognised regional language.
2. Get a better job
I’m sure every day you see or use at least one product from the countless German companies that have branch offices in many other countries, e.g. Deutsche Bank, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, BMW, Porsche, DKV, Schindler, Siemens, Braun, Loewe, Bosch, Miele, Rhenus, DB Schenker, Bayer, BASF, Schwarzkopf… Germany’s economy is one of the strongest in the world, especially in exportations, so there are many job opportunities!
Also the tourism is an important job opportunity because Germans love to travel a lot and are not stingy people! 😉
3. Travelling or living abroad
If you are going to a German-speaking country for work or studies (Germany grants a generous number of scholarships), or you are going just for holidays, OR maybe you are already living in Germany. Although many Germans speak English, you will always get better access to their culture and make friends more easily speaking their language!
4. German is easy for English speakers
If you are a native English speaker or speak English well, German will be easier to master for you. The reason is both languages have the same Germanic root, meaning they share a lot of vocabulary and grammatical features! (Example: We love sunshine = wir lieben Sonnenschein.)
5. “The land of Poets and Thinkers”
Have you heard of this expression about Germany? This is due to the fact that many famous poets and writers are Germans (or wrote in German), e.g. Goethe, Thomas Mann, Günter Grass, Franz Kafka, the Brothers Grimm, Patrick Süskind, as well as important philosophers such as Kant, Nietzsche and Heidegger. And not to forget the world-famous scientist Einstein! So, if you’d like to read any of them in their original language, you’ll need German!
And also there are loads of movies, series and music in German to discover!
Bonus reason: You love languages
I am one of these: I learn languages because I love to learn new linguistic systems, words, pronunciations… and their culture! There’s nothing more effective than learning a language if you want to really understand a new culture!
